Open Music is both a concert series and a performing group. Founded as a way to present the more adventurous and experimental side of music making, Open Music is a kind of experimental municipal band. Many players are professionals, some are amateurs, and some are performing for the first time. This model addresses both performer’s and audience’s need for an inclusive and collaborative environment for making, experiencing, and understanding art.
We cover a wide aesthetic range in our work: we play original music and improvise, perform works by composers, musicians and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, explore and collaborate with other media, and adapt theatrical pieces for our Open Music model. The series and ensemble were both founded in 2014 at Webster’s Bookstore Cafe in State College, PA. Since then, we’ve played at local venues throughout central Pennsylvania including State College, Millheim, Bellefonte, and Williamsport.
